Shooting a guerrilla style music video on a budget.

The inns and outs of working on a budget.

Lets get it on paper first. Do not underestimate the power of a good script and a creative location scout. Location cost can be a determining factor in the feasibility of project in the creative proses. Look for locations that you don’t have to pay for. Tip one rather hire a security guard.

Most music videos are shot in one to two days at no more than two locations.

Breaking down the script and involving collaborating artists. If you are working on a tight budget don’t forget the possibility of others that would like to collaborate to get them selves noticed. I mean that as a producer you could involve up and coming crew, dancers and talent as extra’s. I work closely with film school and university students and have in the past have had real success working with them by making sure to properly brief the on screen and off screen personal.

Never try to save on make up and wardrobe, and set design make sure what you put on the screen looks expensive and well thought trough.

Using a director of photography that owns his own gear. You could get him and his gear for the shoot as a package. Most DOP’s have a personal DSLR kit that is light weight with accessories like sliders jibs and light kits they use on smaller productions.

Finally I would suggest to use a click track overlay on the on set recording played to pace the artist. This helps in post production to save time synchronising the video to the music in edit.
